I tried UberSELECT when I went on vacation last fall. It was a nice way to arrive at my hotel. I got picked up in a late-model, black, leather-seated Lexus SUV. I had my $15 Uber First Ride Promo code so the $30 ride only cost me $10.
Here is what the email from Uber Oregon said:
We are excited to announce the launch of UberSELECT in Portland starting on December 8th, 2015. UberSELECT represents the best rated partner-drivers with the most high-end cars on the Uber Platform.”

My feeling is it will start slow here in Portland, since we are not really big on cars as status symbols here. I also happen to think the UberPEDAL idea is more our style. That being said, it will be nice to have an upscale choice when going out on the town for a special occasion or coming home from the airport from a special trip.
UberSELECT and Events
If you have a wedding or other special occasion, it would be nice to use UberEVENTS to order UberSELECT for your guests.
UberSELECT and Drivers
As for how good Uber Select is for drivers in Portland, I do wonder if the business model for this type of high end, late model car really holds up. I haven’t done the math or any experimentation, but my gut is that the higher fare you get with UberSELECT, doesn’t make you as much net profit as a used Prius does for UberX in Portland.
How is UberSELECT different?
For the uninitiated, there are several levels of service with Uber. UberX is the low cost option (called UberPOP if you travel in Europe). These are vehicles for up to four passengers and are no older than 2000 models that include Toyota Prius, Nissan Maxima, Honda Civic, and Mazda 3, for example.
UberXL is also a low cost option that caters for those needing to transport more passengers. UberXL are often SUVs that can carry at least six riders – at half the price of UberSUV.
UberBLACK is, as the name suggests, a service that provides black cars for a little more luxury. Three other passengers will also be able to experience the comfort of a high end sedan with comfortable, black leather seats with you. The cars are typically Executive Lincoln town cars, Mercedes S-class, BMW 5 or 7-series, Cadillac XTS, or Lexus LS460s but there are also plenty of other models. UberSELECT stands between these lovely luxurious motors and the more basic yet functional UberX.
Of course, one of the best reasons to choose UberSELECT in Portland is our traffic jams. In case you haven’t heard, Portland has the tenth worst traffic jams in the whole of the United States. Obviously, if you’re going to be sitting in gridlock, it’s nice to have someone else behind the wheel and to enjoy a more comfortable ride in an high-end vehicle.
You can’t always treat yourself to a luxury service like UberBLACK but you can get a little extra joy from a bad traffic situation if you get to sit in a shiny new Tesla or live a fantasy of lording over the other vehicles in a Hummer H3. Finally, you get to enjoy the fact that someone else is having to navigate all of the one-way streets in your home town!
So, is it worth spending a little bit more money for an UberSELECT? I personally believe it is. Not only can you hire them for a special event where you want a stylish ride without the hassle of driving but you can also enjoy a nicer ride when you’ve just come into town after a long flight and know that you have a clean, safe, and comfortable ride away from the airport.
